Superfood Number Eleven

This superfood is not just for the Scots and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I eat this every morning whether I'm at home in Cyprus and the weather's 35 degrees or its snowing outside in Scotland. This is one instance where the cheapest breakfast choice is definitely the healthiest... Porridge oats!

So, what's so great about oats?

  • Oats lower your bad cholesterol levels by up to 25% due to their mixture of soluble and insoluble fibre.
  • This reduction of cholesterol reduces the risk of developing heart disease, including atherosclerosis and strokes.
  • Oats can help to boost your immune system; great for preventing colds in the winter!
  • They help to stabilise your blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • As with a lot of my other super foods, oats are high in selenium; as I have previously mentioned, this antioxidant substance helps to decrease the symptoms of asthma and reduce the risk of colon cancer.
  • Eating a high fibre diet (including oats) can also reduce the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
  • Oats make you feel fuller for longer and provide you with slow-release energy for the day ahead!  This is also useful for exercise, porridge oats making a great pre-workout meal.
  • As well as selenium, oats are high in manganese, iron, vitamin A and zinc. A 28g serving of cooked oats provides 11% of your fibre intake, 25% of your vitamin A and 40% of your iron RDA with only 100 calories and 2g of fat.

You will notice most of my recipes here are breakfast ones...but that is the norm for eating oats! ;)

Cold Overnight Apple & Cinnamon Porridge 

Simply combine 1/4 cup oats with 1/2 cup of water (or milk), a small grated apple and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Put in an airtight container and leave in the fridge overnight. Can be heated in the microwave for two minutes for a cold morning!
