Superfood Number Nine

Sorry guys! I have been so busy with uni work this week.. I've had posters and emails to design, essays to write, a trip to London to pack for! 

Anyway, today's superfood is not just good for warding off vampires... 


Garlic is extremely beneficial to our health and it is so versatile that it can be included in practically ever meal. Well that's probably going a bit over the top, I don't quite fancy garlic porridge but you get the point!



• Garlic contains a compound called allicin which is a powerful antibiotic which fights against bacteria and viruses. It is believed to reduce the risk of catching a cold by up to 50% by strengthening the body's immune system and defences! 

• This substance is also thought to be good for balancing blood sugar levels and helping with weight loss; it can help to break down fat and lower the risk of weight gain. Of course you need to exercise and eat a healthy balance diet too... Don't start eating garlic for breakfast, lunch and dinner! ;)

• Garlic contains germanium which is an anti-cancer substance.

• Garlic is a powerful antioxidant which can reduce cholesterol. As well as this, it's compounds are thought to thin the blood (in blood clots), reducing blood pressure and relaxing the blood vessels there by reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and promoting heart health! Who would have thought it in that tiny clove?! 

• Garlic is high in Vitamins B and C as well as zinc and manganese. 

• Online remedies can be found using garlic to help with: asthma, ear infections, sore throats, tonsillitis, warts, insect bites and clearing sinuses!

Oh, and don't worry too much about garlic breath; just make sure you eat it with parsley or have a few slices of lemon, or some lemon juice after!

A quick search on my blog revealed a lot of garlic recipes. Sometimes, out of convenience, I use dried garlic powder in my meals just for flavour but, as can be expected, this has no where near the amount of health benefits as the fresh stuff! So if you can, try and substitute my 'garlic powder' with crushed/ finely chopped garlic!
